The film is set in 26 AD on the territory of the Roman Empire. Strong and powerful Rome continues to expand its borders and capture vast lands. Judea, where Jesus Christ was recently born, is also conquered. A wealthy and influential Jew Ben-Hur meets his old friend Messala, who has become a prominent Roman politician and very famous person. Old friends cannot agree on views due to ideological contradictions. Ben-Hur becomes a galley slave, and his mother and sister go to jail.
During one of the sea battles, the hero saves the life of the Roman consul and receives citizenship, regalia and a significant fortune. Having become an honorable man, he comes to his home, but finds there only his former slaves. His beloved Esther tells that the hero's mother and sister are imprisoned by Messala. Ben-Hur comes to an old friend and demands to release his relatives immediately. However, his family had long been mistaken for lepers and taken from the capital to a remote prison, where they died from unsanitary conditions. A man who has lost his loved ones and is angry with the whole world decides to take part in a dangerous chariot race to defeat Messala.
